In honor of National Poetry Month, we’re celebrating the power of words to shape culture, spark conversations, and inspire new voices. Three exhilarating rounds. Local poets bringing fire. Plus, a special guest performance you don’t want to miss. 12 poets compete for $1,850 in cash prizes, and the winner snags a $1,000 grand prize. Want to compete? 12 spots total—6 are saved for slam veterans, and 6 open slots are first-come, first-served at the door. You must be 18+ to compete. All ages are welcome to attend.   • Admission: Tickets: $18-$20 Buy Tickets Rules & Format 1. 12 poets will compete in up to 3 rounds of poetry in an effort to win the title. Up to 6 slots will be reserved for poets who have historically competed in the slam on an invitational basis. 6 slots will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. The list opens when doors open the night of the event. 2. The slam is 3 rounds so poets should bring a minimum of 3 original pieces but a 4th is encouraged in the case of a tiebreaker. A tie will only be broken if there is a tie for first place and only if both poets agree. Otherwise, the top two prizes will be combined and split between the two. 3. Poets will draw numbers randomly prior to round 1. Any poet not present for the draw will not be eligible to slam. The draw will take place at 6:45pm. The order of round 2 & 3 will be determined by the highest scoring poet going first and the lowest scoring poet going last except when a poet would perform back to back, in which case the order of the top 2 score will be switched. 4. This slam has a time limit of 3 minutes with a 10-second grace period. .5 points will be deducted for every 10 seconds past the grace period. Poets whose performance exceed 4 minutes will be disqualified. 5. All work must be original work. Any sampling must not exceed 30 seconds of the entire work. 6. No costumes or props. Just you, a microphone, and the paper/ medium you’re reading the poem from. Judges 5 judges will be chosen randomly from the audience on the evening of the event. Judges will score each poem on a scale of 1-10 with 1 decimal point allowed. The highest and lowest scores will be dropped and the remaining 3 scores added for a maximum poem score of 30.
