History Seek Saturday: Smith Plantation, A Roswell Legacy

Learn about the legacy of the Arthur and Mary Smith family from their great-nephew, Jim Skinner.

Roswell’s Historic House Museums and the Roswell Library invite you to visit the library to learn about the enduring legacy of the Arthur and Mary Smith family. Arthur Smith’s grandparents, Archibald and Ann Smith, moved to “the colony” of Roswell in 1838 from St. Mary’s, Georgia, bringing enslaved people who worked on their plantation. Arthur started the first library in Roswell, and it is Smith family land on which the Roswell Library, Cultural Arts Center, and City Hall stand today. Arthur and Mary’s great-nephew, Jim Skinner, will speak about how the Smith land was transferred to the City and about his family’s history and legacy in Roswell. After the presentation, you can walk next door to Smith Plantation to see the original house and outbuildings.
